More than Half of SocNet Users Play Social Games
Due to the recent exponential growth in online social gaming, more and more companies are embracing the commercial opportunities within this exciting sector. Indeed, during the last month alone, two major media companies have made acquisitions in this marketplace: Viacom’s MTV Networks has acquired social game developer Social Express and more recently Disney purchased Playdom.
Whether or not a trend of consolidation will continue in this, and other segments of the online gaming industry, we remain to be seen. However, from a consumers’ standpoint, this increased focus by large companies can only be a good thing as the demand from users is definitely there – as demonstrated by the recent study published by Newzoo on Social Games. This research showed that more than 80% of social network users play online games and almost half of all gamers play some form of social games.
The surveys were carried out concurrently across the US, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Amongst the key findings of this study were:
• Gamers in the Netherlands are the most willing to play Social Games (91%).
• Social network users are the most willing to play Social Games (62%).
• Social Games are as popular amongst men as women, although the majority of Social games payers are male.
